NEON ICON / THE JOURNAL

The collector’s
notebook.

Simple notes for a closer look at the hobby. Start with the card in front of you.

01 / COLLECTING NOTES

A closer look before your next purchase.

A listing gives you a place to start. Before deciding, take a moment to look past the player and the price.

Read the whole card.

Compare the player, year, set, card number, and any parallel or serial numbering with the title and description. Ask about anything that does not line up.

Look at both sides.

Study the front and back images. Pay attention to the corners, edges, surface, and centering. A single photograph cannot show every angle or flaw, so request another view when you need it.

Know what you are buying.

Read the condition notes and confirm whether the card is raw or graded. For a graded card, review the label and the grading company’s verification information. For an autograph or memorabilia card, read the wording on the card rather than assuming what it means.

Leave room for questions.

The right purchase is one you understand. If a detail matters to you, ask before checkout.

02 / THE BASICS

Base cards, parallels, and the chase.

A base card belongs to the main set. A parallel is an alternative version, often distinguished by color, finish, numbering, or another design detail. The exact names and formats vary by product.

Serial numbering is one clue, not the whole story. Check the product’s official checklist and compare the actual card. Similar colors or finishes can have different names across sets.

Build your own collecting brief: a player, team, set, or design you enjoy. It makes browsing more intentional—and the next find more personal.
